Review: iBomber app for iPhone

February 10, 2010 7:45 pm

ibomber 1

iBomber is a surprisingly fun and addictive arcade style game for the iPhone. While it could in no way be considered a simulation of aerial combat it is still quite enjoyable and should appeal to most World War II aviation enthusiasts.

The game is basically a sandbox style shooter, meaning that the entire level takes place in a rectangular map with black walls preventing your egress from the gaming area. Your viewpoint is through the bomb site of an unknown type of American bomber (the menu screen suggests a B-17 Flying Fortress) in the Pacific Theater of Operations. You fly a series of missions against Japanese targets ranging from bunkers to battleships. You have an unlimited supply of 500 lb. iron bombs and occasionally you can acquire limited amounts of specialized bombs and health packs from bombed targets. The specialty bombs include multi-bombs, rocket bombs and bunker busters, each having a its own strength and weaknesses. The health packs are needed to repair the damage you receive from anti-aircraft artillery and the defensive fire of various enemy bombers. The aircraft fly at static heights and often orbit carriers and other surface installations and ships.

Game play is simple as are the controls. You only control your direction and speed with your height being fixed. Left and right turns are accomplished but turning the iPhone left or right while throttle control is achieved by tilting the unit up to slow the aircraft down. This last feature limits playability in anything except an upright manner. Playing while laying down is not recommended as throttle control is limited at that orientation. That is a minor issue however and most people would not find it to be an issue.

If you enjoy a World War II themed combat games, don’t mind the arcade style action, and are looking for a quick, fun game then iBomber is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and though it is a bit pricey at $2.99 I felt it to be worth it. There is a free trial version if you want to try before you buy.

Company: Cobra Mobile
Platform: iPhone, available through iTunes
Size: 42.9mb
Rating: 9+ for infrequent/mild cartoon or fantasy violence
Price: $2.99 as of 2/10/10, Free lite version

Review: Classic Fighters Omaka 2009 – Official DVD

December 9, 2009 7:16 pm

Review by Dave Homewood

omaka-1

The DVD that captures the essence of this year’s Classic Fighters Omaka 2009 Airshow is superb!

This year the DVD has been produced by an all new team who have brought together all the essential elements of the biennial three-day event into a neatly packaged 82 minute film. The movie has a fast paced feeling, with a really modern style, which draws the viewer into the subject and puts you right on the spot in the audience at the airshow.
In fact the audience is something of a feature of the film, and I spotted many familiar forum faces there among the photographers, flyers and airshow goers on the field.

New Aviation Themed Steak House in Wichita

April 5, 2009 8:15 am

WIX User Green Goggles reports in:

“Hangar One Steakhouse had its grand opening Friday April 3rd. Since I like airplanes and I needed to get out of town, I drove up to check things out on Saturday. The entire places is aviation themed from the tables to the restrooms, from the bar to the menu. B-17 Bomber Burgers, KC “Landing” Strip, T-6 Texan T-Bone, B-24 Lobster Tail Guns, Mach 1 Mac & Cheese, etc. Laughing Laughing

Overall, it was a really decent place. The food was not the best thing to ever touch my lips, but it was very good. Wait times were high and things were a bit chaotic and disorganized, but I think that was mostly due to the busyness of the establishment’s first weekend. In time, I am sure they will get things running smoothly.
The view from the bar upstairs overlooks Wichita Mid-Continent Airport (ICT) and it is a very, very cool view.”

Thanks GG for letting us know about this interesting place. For more pictures check out Green Goggles original thread on WIX.

Hangar Tales

June 11, 2008 5:51 pm

These stories happened to me or my close friends. I have been active in Warbirds since I was 13. While other kids were playing video games and such, I was working on a B-17 and Me-109 ( HA-1112).
My best friend was Carl Schmieder, he was a board member of Warbird of America, T-6 Lead at Oshkosh, a ICAS ACE, and help start the FAST program. He also helped me to get my A&P, and private pilots certs. I was flying formation before I had my pilots license. Carl dies in the crash of his T-6 in Jan 99.

Matt Flew the Flight

On the 4th of July, the city of Phoenix puts on a huge event on the grounds of the state capitol, complete with big name entertainers, vendors selling food, and of course fireworks and every 4th of July, Carl and the Cactus Squadron did a over flight as part of the show. I normally flew with Carl, but one year as we were briefing the flight, Chuck Bivenour, who flew the # 4 position, said he did not have a backseater and who wanted to go on the flight. One of the ground crew said they would go. I got thinking about it and asked to trade with Chuck’s passenger as I had not flown in the slot position that much and wanted the experience. A trade was agreed to and at the briefed time, 4 600 horse Pratt & Whitney’s roared into life. The flight consisted of Carl Schmieder in the lead, # 2 was Bob Mitchell #3 was Rick Hosking and # 4 was Chuck and myself. After take off we formed up and headed to the hold point over the fuel farm, about 5 miles from the capitol. Carl put the flight into a diamond formation and started to circle. After 2 circles Chuck asked if I wanted to fly, of course I said yes, but I need to get my sight picture first.
