First Active-Duty A-10C Squadron Should Be Operational By Year’s End

January 18, 2007 7:34 amWed Jan 17, 12:11 AM ETLONDON (AFP) – Four British soldiers in Afghanistan strapped themselves to the wings of fast-moving Apache attack helicopters in a daring attempt to rescue a comrade shot by the Taliban, the defence ministry said.
“This is believed to be the first time UK forces have ever tried this type of rescue mission … It was an extraordinary tale of heroism and bravery of our airmen, soldiers and marines who were all prepared to put themselves back into the line of fire to rescue a fallen comrade,” said UK Task Force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Rory Bruce.

Enter to Win an F-4 Phantom?

A curious raffle was found by some astute readers at the Warbird Information Exchange (WIX). It seems that a McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom is being raffled off by an organization in Alamogordo, New Mexico, but it is a static display plane only. Take a look at the discussion at WIX to learn about the history of the plane and its curious story. From the looks of the website, the only way you can enter to win is by buying some F-4 merchandise… and a “travel voucher” of some kind.
There are some catches though… if you win it, you have to bring it home from NM yourself! And don’t think of flying it back either… this plane is for static display only and it is sufficiently demil’ed to assure it stays that way! I apologize to our readers in Florida and New York… you aren’t eligible… shucks!

Australian F-111 Makes Gear-Up Landing

An Australian F-111 had to make an emergency landing after one of the wheels seperated from the landing gear after take-off. The incident has caused an audit of the Australian Air Forces F-111 fleet.

F-35 JSF named “Lightning II”
July 12, 2006 8:48 amAero-News.net has reported that the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is expected to be officially dubbed the “Lightning II” in honor of the famous P-38 Lightning. The name will be worn by Navy and Marine versions as well.
